How to install a Rubber Expansion Joint:
- Ensure the piping has adequate anchoring points.
- Good pipe guiding.
- Good supports.
- Ensure the anchors won't fail in service. Check the thrust loads.
- Ensure there is corrosion protection.
- Ensure the system doesn't over-pressurise.
- Ensure there is erosion protection.
- Ensure the correct model of rubber expansion joint is installed for the purpose. Check the anticipated operating conditions.
- Ensure the rubber expansion joint is installed in the correct location. Rubber expansion joints should be installed near anchor points and in between anchor points.
- Check the rubber expansion joint before installing it. Any cracks or damage will get worse under pressure.
- Check the pipe alignment before installing a rubber expansion joint.
- Check the mating flanges on the pipes' ends, ensuring the flange faces are clean, smooth, and free of sharp edges.
- Use a suitable lubricant and lubricate the mating faces.
- Line up the expansion joint with the gap in between where it will be installed and put into position. Now, using a couple of nuts and bolts, place through the bolt holes of the flanges on each side, and loosely secure.
- Fit all remaining nuts and bolts and loosely secure.
- Now start tightening the nuts and bolts in the required sequence, around both flanges.
- Do not over-tighten the nuts and bolts.
- Install limit rods/control rods if required.
